The titer study, headed by me and supported by the AFA and it's generous
donors, does not have to be paid for in any way. The AFA pays the lab fee - there
may be a fee from your vet for blood collection and shipping costs. IF you
can, a donation to cover the cost of the titer for your ferret(s) is
appreciated, and additional to help cover it for those who can't is even more
appreciated - that would go directly to the AFA.
Every ferret that has been vaccinated against distemper is eligible - we do
request that titers be done on or near the anniversary of the most recent
vaccination, and we are most in need of those ferrets two or more years out from
that most recent vaccine at this time. We are also in need of repeat ferrets,
ie, those that have had their titers done multiple years in a row, and are just
now starting to get those results coming in.
If you do not know the most recent vaccine date, but do know that it is over
a year, go ahead and get the titer, then repeat it yearly at around the same
time. It won't be usable for every bit of analysis, but would be usable for
the longevity of antibody analysis.
