Sukie,

I have three non-descented ferrets, one of which has had an anal
gland infection. I had a lot of poofing when the girls first came as
they adjusted to their new home, I never saw a pink spot on the anus.
Not to say it isn't normal, just that I never saw any pink spots.
They still occasionally poof if frightened like when my gib (before
his Lupron injection took effect) lunged at them while they were in
their playpen. That was fun - 3 poofing ferrets!

As you probably already know the scent glands are located at about
the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions lateral to the anaus. If the
scent gland is impacted or infected sometimes a fissure will form.
If you feel next to the anus and find a hard little lump its probably
impacted or infected. If its copiously wet, so that your hand or
fingers are dripping in the stuff, it is probably infected. I found
with Bellissima when she had an anal gland infection the smell was
incredibly rank and lingered for hours unlike their regular healthy
poof, which dissipates in minutes.

I'll be interested in hearing from others who have anal scent gland
intact ferrets, whether pink spots are normal.

Tressie
