I received an email today suggesting that I have my new ferret tested
for ADV. I live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia (Canada) and
have never heard of any cases of this disease. As far as I know there
isn't any test available here. I would like to know if anyone knows of
any ADV cases here. Any info would be appreciated.
Because ADV is a disease that ferrets can have but not necessarily show
symptoms of, unless people in your area are actually testing for ADV, there
may not be any reported cases, but there may still be ADV.
Further, ADV is present in wild populations of mink, skunks and raccoons.
These animals can carry and transmit the disease.
ADV does not recognize state and country boundary lines. ADV is definitely
present in the US in Washington State, which is not that far from you.
Testing is the only way to know for certain whether or not a ferret has ADV.
That is why I recommend that all ferrets get tested at least once.
While it is not near to you, the University of Guelph does offer ADV testing
for Canadians.
