Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Ways to taking ferrets or a ferret a bath
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Katie,
Can use a shampoo made for ferrets or a baby shampoo. Baths can be done in a tub or kitchen sink. Water should be warm, NOT hot, Wet the ferret from back of ears to tip of tail by putting him or her in about three or four inches of water. Lather him or her up then rinse a couple of times to be sure you get all the soap out of their coat. Try not to get the shampoo in their ears or eyes. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe their face and ears. I use the spray hose in the kitchen sink or the running water in the bathtub to rinse them off. They get a preliminary drying before they are put on the floor to roll in towels on the floor. They go bonkers for about ten minutes after getting their bath, trying to dry off. War dances and zooming through the house. Usually I use the bath tub, two at a time, but we have 17 that get baths, no more than twice a year. Usually late Spring and mid Fall.

Most important things to remember, Rinse them well. Dry shampoo itches. And change their bedding at least once a week. Twice a week is better. Clean bedding makes a clean ferret. By bedding I mean hammocks, cuddle cups, hanging cubes or floor blankets in the cages. Keep that clean and fresh and you won't notice their scent as much. And clean those ears every month. Wax and oil builds up in them that adds to their scent. Nails should be trimmed every two weeks or as needed. Excessively long nails do split and can cause injury if caught on a cloth item. Ferret could hurt a leg or foot trying to get loose.
