Hi Lisa
Daisy's lymph nodes in the abdomen and chest are enlarges and quite visible
on the x-ray. But the lymph nodes by the back legs are also hard and
enlarged. Much different to the soft lymph nodes that are packed in fat.
I'd never felt hard lymph nodes like this before. But the nodes on the neck
and front legs are not as hard and enlarged as the back legs.
The symptoms are just neurologic, it started with veering to the right when
she was running and now she badly stumbles along, veers to the right and
left and falls over. But she is not discouraged and keeps trying and she
gets to where she wants to be eventually. But no other symptoms, appetite,
stool, urine are all fine and she's still active.
Daisy was put on 0.5 mg pred at first to see whether it was an inflammatory
sort of problem. It is probably hard to understand but the mentality here
in rural Wales/ UK is different to some places is the USA. When (some) vets
see a sick ferret, they often try antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs
first and if the ferret doesn't get better, they investigate further. I
personally have had so many sick ferrets and went straight for x-ray and
blood tests and often they didn't show anything. So that is discouraging.
The first thing my vet did when Daisy was anaesthetised was checking the
ears out. I was hoping it was an ear infection even though I had checked
the ears myself but I thought my vet can look deeper into the ears but
nothing. Because I figured we check the ears first and if there is a
problem then we don't need the x-ray. When the ears were fine, my vet
proceeded to the x-ray and also took blood for testing...
Good luck with Sonny and I hope he doesn't have anything else besides his
insulinoma...
