Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret bathing
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My ferrets only get a bath if their body odor gets stronger than usual, they get urine or feces on themselves, or if they play somewhere, like outside or in a potted plant, and get REALLY dirty (white ferrets in huge pots right after plant watering makes a dirty sight). I tell people the same as many others do, bathe your ferret less and wash their bedding more and keep the litter box spotless.

I'm not sure what the pH of a ferret's skin is but I did use my shampoo on my dog for a few years and he developed a dry skin condition. He appeared to have dandruff... I changed to the 8N1oatmeal shampoo ( I think is the brand I used) and his skin flaking cleared up.

Human Baby shampoo is a strong formula designed to strip oils from the scalp. It has controlling cradle cap in mind for use. I would think that that shampoo is much too harsh and will strip oils from our ferrets rather effectively leaving them with dry skin and itching. For my ferrets, I have used 8N1 shampoos, but the one I really like I found after getting my dog's dry skin condition under control. It is called Fresh and Clean... the flea/tick formula seems to have the nicest fragrance and I have not had any problems with dry fur or dry skin... but remember I don't bathe more often than 2 or 3 times a year. also you can find tearless shampoos for pets too so the baby shampoo for humans is not necessary.

Hope that helped.

Vicki
