Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] How to deal with possible heart worm exposure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I know with our dog, we have to wait for blood results to confirm she doesn=
't have heartworm before we start the medication that she takes monthly thr=
ough the summer months.=A0 I was told by our vet that if she did have heart=
worm and we gave her the meds the worms would die in her heart (I think the=
y expand?) and that could cause serious issues including a heart attack or =
death.=A0 I would think it would be the same for any animal that could get =
heartworm.=A0 Can the vet do a blood test to make sure your fert doesn't ha=
ve heart worm?

[Moderator:
The Idexx test works for ferrets.
Heartworms in ferrets are handled differently than in dogs.
See:
http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc/heartworm.htm
and for more recent info in
http://weah4.tripod.com/
select
"doctors"
then in Dr. Cottrell's section select
medical publications and presentations
(and the direct address
http://weah4.tripod.com/id22.html
might work) ]
