Subject: [ferrethealth] New Ferret - What Should I Feed Him?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I just got a ferret a couple of weeks ago, hes about 3 months old
now. He is deaf, and so my boyfriend and I have been doing TONS of
research on deaf ferrets, and in the process came across a lot of
conflicting information on food.

Right now he is getting a mix of Marshall food and Totally Ferrets
Kit to 1 year food. (3 parts marshall 2 parts Totally Ferrets.)

I have heard a lot about the raw foods diet and it makes a lot of
sense that that would be the healthiest so I am all for trying that.
My boyfriend is scared it will make him mean to feed him meat.
Should we try the raw food or keep him on just Kibble?

I have recieved a lot of conflicting information on what brands to
feed, what treats to give, and if raw food is or is not a good idea.
What are some of the healthiest options available and how should I
get him on those?

Thanks!!

-Ashley

[Moderator's Note: given how many complain if the food discussions
come up too often it is probably best to write to Ashley directly
unless a person has some interesting new data to add to the many things
in the very easily searched FHL Archives:
http://ferrethealth.org/archive/
such as study abstracts from journals.

Basically, any food choice has its upsides and downsides. As long as a
person avoids the cheap kibbles and is careful to provide a balanced
diet rich in enough minerals and other nutrients if done at home (ex.
raw or cooked which too often are not made or provided as balanced
diets with enough non-meat provided) then the choices are neither
perfect nor horrendous no matter which choice is made. So although
some may argue in extremes, the results themselves are not in
extremes usually. Just read the downsides as well as upsides in the
archives and make your choices.]
