Subject: [ferrethealth] How to deal with possible heart worm exposure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My understanding is that when heartworms die they ball up and block arteries which can cause a heart attack... also they can die and throw a segment to the lungs causing other complications including partial paralysis or death. I've seen one ferret who did throw a segment and it was a very sad case.. she did have to have her bowels and bladder expressed two to three times a day.. her urine was bright green indicating, I believe it was her liver damage... sad case, but she was well cared for until she died...

No I think that the treatment is the preventative... the benefit of the test is knowing that you either do or do not have the HWs and know to watch her closely if she does...
