Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: How to deal with possible heart worm exposure?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I sent this person the contact information for the most expert vet I
know of regarding heartworms in ferrets. I did it off-list since
we're not allowed to mention specific vets here. I don't know if the
person got the information since I never got a response. If anyone
else needs this information, feel free to contact me off-list and I
will provide it.

I did have a little boy who tested HW+. Despite treatment, he died
very unexpectedly one day at a very young age. He never showed any
signs of being ill at all. The only way we knew was because he was
tested. The same vet, mentioned above, is who the ferret came from
and my local vet followed her protocol for treatment.

It is very important to give HW preventive. It is much more prevalent
than we realize because so few vets test ferrets for HWs. In the
south, preventive should be given monthly, year-round.
