Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferrets and Pregnancy - RE Listeria
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

I would like to know if there is any credible possibility that an
asymptomatic pet ferret could be infected with Listeria and pass that
illness to humans.

I can find very little information regarding this disease in ferrets,
since it appears to be extremely rare. I can also find no mention of
ferret to human transmition, and virtually no descriptions of the
tests that can be performed to detect Listeria in ferrets.

I have two spayed female ferrets, and have owned the oldest for four
years. They show none of the symptoms of Listeria, and never go
outside (except via their pet carrier) nor eat any of the foodstuffs
that are known to present a risk of contamination.

I am asking because my wife, who is pregnant, is concerned about the
risk presented by this illness to unborn babies, and I would like to
set her mind at ease, if there is practically no risk of our ferrets
being infected.

Thanks to all that read this.
