Subject: [ferrethealth] Clostridium bacteria
To: Ferret Health <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Gus is a year old male ferret that I adopted appx 2 months ago. A few weeks ago, he developed runny loose poops. The vets had done a couple of tests, and they told me they found Clostridium. They originally put him on Clavamox and Metronidazole. About a week into treatment, his stools started getting more loose. I called the vets and they said try cutting out the Clavamox, and only dosing him the Metronidazole since that kills the Clostridium. I tried that, it went to full diahrrea. Took him back to the vets, they ran another stool check, said he still had Clostridium, to try putting him back on the Metronidazole and adding in some Bene-Bac. Did that, and once again full diahrrea.

He'd been off any antibiotics about a week, and its not diahrrea, just really soft loose stools.

I didnt know what Clostridium was, so I looked it up, and it says its normally found in human and animal stool. Now I cant remember if the vet said he had *excess* Clostridium, or just Clostridium?

But vet kinda advised to try just the Clavamoxand also try children's Kaopectate. I couldnt find the Kaopectate, only childrens Imodium. But my question is, that if he does have excess Clostridium, wouldnt the Imodium interfere with his system trying to get rid of it?
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Andrea
