Subject: [ferrethealth] *Really* bad diarrhoea, no appetite, weight loss, weakness, lethargy
To: "FHL" <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

Wesley, neutered, 5 years old, started with diarrhoea last Wednesday. Vet
put him on Baytril. I think he didn't eat much Tuesday night and hardly ate
Wednesday. At first the diarrhoea was light and had a lot of mucus in it
and he had no control over it. It ran out of him in his sleep. By
Wednesday night/ Thursday morning the diarrhoea turned brown and Wesley had
control over it and was able to do his business in the toilet. He still ate
a bit but stopped eating Friday. The diarrhoea became explosive. Friday
vet gave him sub-q fluids and changed antibiotic to Flagyl. Also started
Kaolin. Today, Saturday, more sub-q fluids. Wesley hasn't eaten at all
today, all he gets is Kaolin and Flagyl. I've tried ground meat, liquid
diets, veterinary diets for sensitive tummies, next on the list I got some
chicken baby food. Thursday/ Friday I also tried Carafate to see if that
would help but he still didn't want to eat. He is really not well, has lost
a lot of weight and is weak. I'm collecting diarrhoea to send off to the
lab.

Friday Leo, neutered, 4 years old, in Wesley's group also started diarrhoea,
it is light coloured and explosive but so far he is still eating and not
acting/ looking sick. His sister Piper is good, the only one in the group
who is not ill.

Any help is greatly appreciated, especially from people who have experienced
coccidia because that came to my mind. (I have read up on it on the
Internet and in FHL archives.) Would it be dangerous to try Albon just in
case? My vet has already ordered it. Can it be given alongside Flagyl?
I'm just at my wits end, worried sick and so stressed, I've never had
anything like this. Is there anything else I can do for Wes? I have an
electrolyte powder to make a solution with but Wesley is not keen on it but
will take plain water out of a syringe.

I should mention that both Wesley and Leo gave blood 2 weeks ago, could the
stress have triggered this illness? Wesley gave about 10 ml and Leo about 7
ml.

Another possibility could be ECE. Since there is the FIP-like coronavirus
that appears to be descended from ECE in Europe -- and since that new
one might even have originated in Europe -- it is decent bet that ECE
could well be there. --SDC]
