Subject: [ferrethealth] ferret supplements

I was hoping for some feedback on ferret supplements

Albus has been having diarhea that we were treating with one vet with
no luck. He tried two antibiotics and we decided to try a turkey based
food which he is preferring. We got Bene-bac to try and help get his
system back on track after the antibiotics but before we used it we
had an appointment with another very experienced vet who we have used before.

This vet had us add a clay supplement to the kibble (one half tablespoon per
pound of kibble). The clay is
Nutramin Mineral Powder
Clay-Calcium montmorillonite edible clay for pets.
Used to help with the signs and symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease.

Albus had been having really bad stools, occasional yellow,
sometimes bit of orange. We had the stools tested and were negative (we had suspected coccidia as he was exposed during a shelter board stay). After less than a week on the clay (and the turkey kibble) his stools have improved so much. He has had a couple of loose seedy stools, but most have been normals.

I would appreciate any information about other people's experience with the clay.

We had been using Nupro for ferrets as a supplement in our soup, but it was just brought to my attention that there is garlic in this product and would be harmful to ferrets. I called the company and they said it was a small amount, but when further questioned it is 62 mgs per scoop (which would be a serving size for two ferrets).

One further question, when making a chicken gravy I've used just the soft blendable parts. Another ferret owner mentioned adding in bone meal powder. Would this be a good thing? Not sure if it's the same as the natural bone that would be groound if I did that.

Thank you
Risa
