Hi Joana,
Ferrets can be carriers of the coronavirus that
causes ECE. Kits can be carries for 6 to 8+ months.
Cats can be carriers of the coronavirus that
causes the enteric disease (which is similar to ECE)
and shed the virus for 2 to 9 months. Roughly 13%
of these kittens become lifelong carriers and shedders.
This is different from FIP. FIP is believed to be progressive
and almost always fatal (i.e. no carriers).
Thus your young ferret may be a carrier of ECE, but it is unlikely
to be a carrier of FIP.
Was an autopsy done on the older ferret that passed away?
This would have answered most of your questions about cause of
death and whether she caught something from the young ferret.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
