Subject: [ferrethealth] Update on Montana (Monty)
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>
About 12 days ago I posted about the odd growth on Monty=92s (Montana=92s) =
back,
asking if anyone had seen anything like it before.
As a refresher, Monty had a lump on her back. It was to the right of the
spine, and just back from the shoulder blades. It was not moveable, and wa=
s
oblong in shape. It was not raised up very much, but was about =BD to =BE =
inch
long, and about =BC to 3/8 inch wide. I was fairly certain it was not an
injection site tumor, because I vaccinate on the left side, and my vet
vaccinates in the hind leg muscles.
My vet tried to remove the growth, thinking it might be a fatty tumor. He
had to cut all the way down to the ribs before he found anything. What we
saw was white fibrous strands running along the ribs, both above and below.
There was no way to remove the growth, and it was even difficult to cut a
piece of it off. We were able to do that, however, and sent it off to a
pathologist who is recognized as being very ferret knowledgeable.
The results came back last Friday, but I was out of town. The piece we sen=
t
was identified as a fibroma, which is a benign neoplasm. Unfortunately, th=
e
lump appears to have grown in just the last 2 weeks, and so my vet is
concerned that while the piece we sent may have been benign, he is worried
that at least part of the growth is a fibrosarcoma, which is malignant.
I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow. Monty will get the stitches
removed, and also get an xray. My vet is concerned that the growth may be
destroying the ribs, and he wants to check this.
I will post tomorrow and let you know what we learn from the xray.
In the meantime, Monty still doesn=92t act like she might be sick. Her
appetite is good, as is her activity level.
