First question, is he peeing? Straining, and squatting can sometimes be a problem urinating. Does he have any fur loss, other signs of adrenal?
Is he still active? Is he eating? Any vomiting?

A ferret will never be constipated, but can get blockages so not pooping at all can be a serious sign, diarrhea can cause straining and so can urinary problems.
Males can get stones, urinary bladder crystals, urinary infections, enlarged prostates that can also cause urinary problems. If you notice a problem for more than a few hours, I would take him to the vet for a better look.

It may be nothing, but ferrets tend to do well until all of a sudden they don't and then it is an emergency, I would rather error on the side of caution with them, even if it ends up being nothing.
