Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Brain Tumors In Ferrets
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

She has insulinoma, was diagnosed this past March. She has been on
pred since. Her glucose readings are good (110 to 149), she is tested
daily.

Signs: started about two months ago with weight loss, despite a hardy
appetite, we attributed to adrenal and insulinoma. About two weeks ago
she began having weakness in the front (not back) legs, no trouble
walking but when standing still the front legs slowly give out,
buckling at the ankle, foot curls under, she ends up on her knees.
This past Friday she began circling, stopped eating and was
dehydrated. This happened overnight (she was ok Thursday evening,
running around, eating and drinking, etc). Vet says she is now
completely blind, eyes give no reaction to light. Again, this appears
to have happened overnight, she was good on Thursday. She is now
unable, though not unwilling, to eat on her own. She goes to the food
bowl and "pecks" (tapping at the food but not opening her mouth to
grab it). When kibble is placed in her mouth she chews but it all
falls out of her mouth. When syringe fed soup she laps it up it
eagerly (a good 40 to 50 cc's at a time). She apparently wants to eat,
just doesn't seem able to grasp the food on her own.

There may be more that I'm not thinking of at the moment.

I've had two dogs with Cushings related brain tumors and the symptoms
are familiar, so can understand my vet coming to this conclusion. If
there are other possible causes though I'd certainly welcome information.
