Subject: [ferrethealth] vaginal discharge-infection?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have previously posted about my ferret Ruby who had a subcutaneous mass, which I am
happy to say completely resolved on its own. However, for the last several weeks, she has
been having a vaginal discharge. I first noticed it when she had a piece of cat litter stuck to
her, as she occassionally goes into the cat box. In case she was just irritated I switched to
non-clumping paper litter, which everyone has been using for the last couple of months. The
vet had her on a sulfur antibiotic for a week and then added in Clavamox for 2 weeks when
the first wasn't causing any change. I noticed a decrease in the discharge and a change of
yellowish/occasionally greenish to white or non-existent during the Clavamox, but now that
it is done, the discharge has immediately returned.
She had a full blood workup and ultrasound 6 weeks ago when her cagemate, Pika, passed
away and everything seemed pretty normal-i.e. her adrenals were not enlarged. Also, her
vaginal area is slightly enlarged but only when I notice the discharge dried on it. If I wash her
off, it stays clean for 24-48 hours and her vulva looks normal again.
Other than this her activity and appetite are perfectly normal and even her summer coat is
beautiful.
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks, Kathryn
ps. Ruby is a 3+ yo Marshall Farms spayed female who was found as a stray 2+ years ago.
