It sounds like ear wax to me. I believe ear mites tend to make the ear more crusty/bloody. My rabbit had it one time and it was NASTY, there's really no mistaking that.
However, Clyde's ears are constantly full of earwax. Once it dries it is even kind of a blackish color, but just gently using a cotton swab gets it right out.

I am not a vet. The orange gunk in the ears sounds like ear mites. Your
vet can look at a swab under his microscope and tell for sure and mix
you up a concoction if ivermectin and polyethylene glycol to put in the
ear or you can just treat the ferret with a cat size Rovolution on the
back of the neck.
