Subject: [ferrethealth] Virus causing raspy cough
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have had a virus running through my home/shelter for a few months
and am wondering if anyone else has experienced it?

I suspected it started when my husband complained of the flu. About
a week later I notice some of the ferrets coughing, too.

It's about a week incubation time and the duration has been 3 weeks.
The vet has monitored them and they don't seem to be getting any
infection passing to the lungs. Just the nagging cough. They eat,
sleep and play like usual. Sometimes if slows down the older ones.

A few of my older ones passed away, I believe, because of
complications with this 'virus'.

It is still in my home. A few of the newer arrivals have gotten it
and are almost through the 3 week time.

Another vet mentioned that it is similar to Kennel Cough (Bordetella)
in dogs. Is this true? Is it the same strain that us humans carry
around, too? Or do we possibly have something else going on?

I am scared to get other ferrets in here for fear they are going to
have to go through this, too. Not sure how to get it out of the
house for good.

Thanks,
Liz
