Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Diarrhea...again

It could be IBD. Our Trinny developed this a few months ago. She had pretty much nothing but diarrhea for a long time that ranged from brownish water to foamy mucuous. After a visit to the vet and much experimentation with her diet and with Prednisolone, we've had it under control now for at least a month. Here is what we have found that works for her:

0.30 ml Prednisolone once daily (15 mg/5ml strength)

Diet primarily of soup, that consists of half Gerber's Stage 2 turkey baby food and half Uncle Jim's. To that we add water, a little slippery elm bark powder, sometimes a little plain pumpkin, and sometimes a little acidophilus. We also sometimes use Evo 95% rabbit canned food in place of the baby food. She (and our other ferrets) get this twice a day, and there's Totally Ferret kibble in the cage the rest of the time.

I also give them all a little Vivfy oil every day (about 1.0 ml divided by four ferrets). I had read from a couple of past posts that this helps IBD, possibly because of the high omega counts in the oil.

Trinny has actually gained weight now and is a little on the chubby side, but her IBD seems to be fully under control, and she's otherwise in really good health. Hopefully it will stay that way, as I know that it can have flare ups. We estimate that she's around 5 or 6 years old now, probably closer to 6.

Anyway, that's what has worked in this case.
