Subject: [ferrethealth] HELP!!! Gastrointestinal Disease...Ferret not eating....
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

So my little 2 year old Rocky has been very very sick for the last
month. She lost 1/4 of her body weight (which was quite a bit because
she was always tiny to begin with even in great health), and she
stopped eating and drinking.

She went into the vet and had xrays and blood work, and they determined
she has gastrointestinal disease (no blockages, just an upset system).
The vet perscribed flagyl, vitamin k, amoxicillin, carofate, and pepcid
for 2 weeks. In the beginning while on her meds, she had been fed a can
of a/d perscription diet 4x daily through syringe. The last two weeks I
have began to transition her back to her old food by blending it with
some pedialyte and syringe feeding it to her in place of the a/d.

She has been off her meds 3 weeks, and she still hasn't eaten any dry
food at all on her own. She is drinking on her own though. The vet said
to keep feeding her by syringe until she eats, but I have to wonder if
the can of food daily is filling her little stomach up so much that she
is just not hungry.

I really want her to begin to eat on her own, but I don't want to see
her weight drop again. She is feeling okay and playing again, but still
won't eat and takes frequent trips to the potty (her stools do look
normal). The vet said prednisone (steroid) may be an option. Could that
increase appetite? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO HELP ME GET THIS
LITTLE GIRL TO EAT ON HER OWN AGAIN? Thanks!
