1) There are some anecdotes in the archives of ferts reacting to the
pre-jab Benadryl itself, so would not pre-treating or treating with
Dex alone be a better strategy for the distemper vaccination? (in case
it was the benadryl he was reacting to? or would his tolerating the
additional doses of benadryl after reaction indicate that it was not
the benadryl??)
**Reactions to Benadryl are very rare, and the fact that he did not worsen
with additional Benadryl does indicate that this was not the problem, but the
vaccine itself. However, because of the anecdotal reports, I am using
dexamethasone as my pretreatment and have been for several years.**
2) Is Merial's Purevax CD still number one for reduced reaction risks?
**Yes. As well as being the only licensed vaccine against distemper in
ferrets.**
3) If there is a reaction to the CD or to next years IMRAB3, is it
true that a letter to health officials from the vet will excuse him
from future injections? or with local regulations changing so much
between regions, is this something only the local vet could answer
(I'm moving in a few months, so I will have to check the regs. after
re-settling)r
**It will depend on your health officials. They do NOT have to take a letter
from a vet excusing the animal from vaccination, no matter what. Some will
choose to accept it, others will not. So if your ferret is accused of biting
or scratching without a current valid rabies vaccine, such a letter is flimsy
protection at best.**
