Subject: [ferrethealth] Reaction to Biaxin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

This is directed to the vets on the forum, in particular Dr. Williams
nd Dr. Murray, both who have recommended a combination of Biaxin and
Amoxicillin for ferrets with ulcers.

My 2 year old sprite starting vomiting last Thursday, grinding her
teeth, rubbing her face in the floor, writhing, bloated abdomen and
was whining. She had an x-ray - no obstruction. Diagnosis bleeding
ulcer.

My normal vet was out of town the vet who saw her in the interim
prescribed Metronidazole and Amoxicillin, plus Sulcrate. Of course
she hates the Metronidazole so my vet, who saw her today prescribed
the new protocol for her. The pharmacist said the antibiotics had to
be given on an empty stomache. Vet suggested separating the doses
because they were pretty hefty doses (i.e. .56 cc of Amoxicillin
and .8 Biaxin for an .8 kg ferret.

I started her with the Biaxin, which she loved. Unfortunately, an
hour later threw it all up with bloody mucous. My question, could
she be allergic to it? I don't want to give it to her if it will
cause her to vomit.

Help! Should I go back to the dreaded Metronidazole/Amoxicillin
combo??

Thank you!

Tressie
