Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret not eating
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that Piper (female 7 Y/O) was looking
very flat and thin. She was also grinding her teeth alot.
I took her to the vet on July 3 and was told she has lost a little
weight. We took some xrays and did a complete blood panel. She was
also sub-q'd ( just a bit dehydrated) Results came back with BG good,
white cell count indicated infection and she was given Flagyl (.2ML
twice a day) and Amoxi (.3ML twice a day)along with Pepcid. Piper was
seen by one of the newer vets in the practice.
After a week with no improvement I called and spoke with her regular
vet. I asked about her weight loss and was told that she has lost
100 grams in the span of about 4 weeks. (She'd been in previously for
an eye infection). We went back in for a barium. Barium was given to
her @ 9 AM and by 3 PM she had passed very little. We decided to
keep her there over night. All barium had passed when xrays were
done @ 9:30 AM the following morning. She was sent home on Carafate
(.2ML twice a day) and continuing with the Pepcid. Again she was sub-
q'd.
It seems like her digestive system is very slow. We've discussed that
there could be a thickening of her stomach lining but I don't
understand what would cause this.
Piper is currently on A/D and baby chicken food but has very little
interest in any food except for treats (which I am tryinging to
limit.) Her activity level is very low unless it's 3 AM and she's
jumping onto the bed to beg for a treat or bite me. The she's quite
lively.
She's also not pooing a lot (no surpise since she's not eating)
I don't know if I should water down her food a bit so she gets more
in or what. I'm also trying to understand what could cause her
stomach lining to become thickened. Right now she is too frail to do
any surgery on.
Any ideas would be helpful.
Connie
