Subject: [ferrethealth] Sam's covered in raised red spots
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Sam is approx 4 year old male ferret. He had a bilateral adrenalectomy and insulinoma
surgery in November of 07. He has had no meds since then and his electrolytes have been
checked and okay. I adopted him in January 08 and soon thereafter noticed a few red spots
on his belly where his hair had not yet grown back from surgery. I then noticed that he had
red spots on his skin beneath his coat. He has no itching, nor any scaliness. My ferret vet
thought it was a skin infection and gave him Cepha-drops for 14 days which did not put a
dent in the spots. I have posted photos of the spots in an album called "Sams Spots". It is
hard to tell from the photo but the spots are slightly redder and more raised then they
appear in the photos. He has the spots all over his body, even his head and snout. His hair
has grown back beautifully. His bloodwork a few months ago came back fine for everything.
THe only other problem Sam has is what I believe is IBS. He intermittently has some of the
nastiest poo and then fine for days and then nasty again (have had floats negative and 4
other ferrets live with him with no bad poo) He is always active and in good spirits. I did a
little research in the archives and I am thinking it might be related to his adrenal problems. I
really cannot say exactly when the problem started but we are pretty sure he did not have the
spots prior to surgery last November. I have been hesitant to pursue any further treatments
since he seems to experience no discomfort. Any ideas? Does anyone think i should continue
to try to treat as skin infection?

[Moderator's Note:

Unable to find an album for Sam in the FHL Photo section. If
it is in another location, please, post the URL in a follow-up post.
Hopefully, it will soon appear either way.

Have skin scraping and skin biopsy been discussed/considered/tried?]
