While it is true that removing excess fluid from the abdomen can cause
problems, there are times when it is a life-saving and necessary procedure. I have
had patients live much longer and with much better quality of life when we did
fluid removal as needed. The key is for the treating vet to choose which
patients this will help carefully, remove fluid cautiously, and for the owner to
be aware of the possible complications.
