Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Flomax dose
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Joanne,
Flomax seems like a logical medication to try to
increase urine output, but remember Flomax does
not shrink the prostate. Thus Propecia/Proscar is a
better choice because it does shrink the prostate.
(Avodart is another medication that shrinks the prostate.)
With that said, I do not know if anyone has used Flomax
in ferrets yet. The human dose is 0.4mg (1 capsule), and a
suggested dog dose is 0.01mg/kg once a day. Please note
Flomax is not recommended for use in cats. Unfortunately
the article did not say why, so there may be a problem with
Flomax's use in ferrets also.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
