Subject: [ferrethealth] Re:Epogen and Arimidex
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Sharon,
Hopefully your little girl will not need Epogen or
Arimidex. Lupron and melatonin should lower the estrogen
level, and melatonin helps to stimulate the bone marrow
to make red blood cells. Thus you may not need any
additional medications for her.
Epogen is used to stimulate the bone marrow to
make more red blood cells. Arimidex is used to
lower the estrogen level. They are basically added
to the treatment when Lupron and melatonin cannot
control the estrogen level, and the ferret has anemia from
the elevated estrogen level.
Epogen is an injectable product with a suggestive dose of 100
to 200 units/kg SC to start with, then reduce as the PCV improves.
Arimidex is an oral medication with a suggestive dose of 0.1 mg/kg
once a day.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
