Subject: [ferrethealth] Red blotches all over body
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

A friend of mine called me over to look at her ferret to see if I
could help her identify what's wrong with him.

She has had him for only 5 months (adopted from a 16 yr old that
couldn't properly take care of him) and said he is only 1 1/2 yrs old.

He is adrenal with very thinning hair and itchy. I looked at his
teeth and he appears to be much older than 1 1/2 yrs. To me, he
looks to be more like 3-4 yrs.

What's unusual is the red blotches all over his body. They are not
raised or scabby. They look like age spots, but dark red in color.
Kind of like blood blisters. They are irregular in shape. About the
size of the end of a finger. Sort of like someone dipped their
finger in ink and poked him all over. Some are smaller than others.

That's the best way to describe it..... I have looked through my
Ferrets, Rabbits and Rodents book and found nothing. I've talked
with our shelter owner (13 yrs experience with ferrets) and she
doesn't know what it could be.

Any ideas?

We thought of the allergy route. The owner uses hardwood pellets
(just like I do) for litter, perfume free fabric detergent, natural
cleaners. Her home is very clean, and so is his cage. He eats
Innova EVO. She does not bathe him.

Thanks,
Liz
