To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Even some vets give small amounts of SMOOTH peanut butter
to help with some meds. It is essential that it be the smooth
variety because a piece of nut can cause a blockage. Much of
the ferret intestine is about as wide inside as the inside of an
uncooked piece of elbow macaroni, and the nuts won't digest,
so you might get lucky and have them pass through or you
might wind up with a ferret who needs a difficult emergency
surgery to live. (This is also one reason why people must
ferret-proof carefully, and not allow their ferrets to have toys
which have chucks come off that can't be digested.) So,
NEVER GIVE CHUNKY.
If you are going to try a preserve (which as you know isn't the
best choice) be very sure that it has no chucks, no seeds, and
NEVER GIVE GRAPE. In ferrets, as in dogs and cats there have
been cases of acute kidney failure from too many grapes and
too many raisins. No one know yet why grapes and raisins
can do this in members of Carnivora, but the amount is
important and no one really knows the safe levels, so while the
tiny bit of raisin juice in some foods is likely to be fine giving
more might not be, and stashes eaten at once are even more
likely to prove a great risk to survival. (Many things have already
been looked at from residue (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers,
fungicides, etc) to fungi and beyond but the last i heard the cause
has still not been found.
You can find more about these topics in the FHL Archives which
are very easy to use. Instead of looking at the list site, instead
