Subject: [ferrethealth] Possible damage to the sciatic nerve
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Quick history:
I have a 3 year old male ferret named Rocky who has been through a good
bit over the last few months. He has been diagnosed with IBD after
being misdiagnosed with heliobacter twice and is currently on
prednisone for that. Other than that, he is a laid back ferret.

Problem:
I took him to the vets on thursday 7th of August for his rabies
vaccine. He was given a benedryl injection into his rear leg before he
was given the rabies vaccine into his scruff. I quickly noticed that he
was no longer putting weight on his back leg and was resting upon the
joint. After being told this is a normal reaction I was sent away.

After it didn't imporve he was given pain meds (metacam) as walking on
the joint was tearing up the skin and causing obvious discomfort. It
hadn't improved by tuesday so back to the vets he went (without me as I
was out of town). The vet does not believe that he severed the nerve as
Rocky still has feeling in his toes - although he doesn't seem to feel
all too much. For example, I put his leg in a bowl of warm water to
help clean the location, until I was above the knee Rocky did not react
at all. The vet has given him clavamox now as he is worried about a
possible infection. Tonight I got to see him walk for the first time in
three days and there is a very slight improvement. He appears to be
putting a tiny bit of weight on the foot before collapsing to the knee
again.

Question:
Does this sound right? I have my doubts about the vet's knowledge but
I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt now. I will agree that the
nerve may not be severed but is it possible that the damage could be
permanent and he will never regain full use of that leg? Any advice
would be appreciated.
