Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Kibble
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

We feed our five ferrets soup twice a day, but always have a good quality kibble in the cage between meals (we use Totally Ferret). Just like you are not always hungery at the same time every day, or are not always hungry when food is in front of you, ferrets also will be hungry at different times. Sometimes they eat more soup, sometimes more kibble. But all five do eat some amount of kibble at some point between soup meals. Also, their digestive cycle is about 4 hours from eating to pooping, so feeding just every 12 hours would leave them pretty darned hungry by meal time and could cause a lot of peaks and valleys in blood glucose levels.

As for ferretlax or vaseline, try mixing a little plain canned pumpkin in the soup every couple of days. It will help clean them out, firm up the poops, and avoid any problems from fur in the digestive tract.
