Nikki:

I am really sorry to hear that your little ones have come down with ECE. We had a young ferret who developed ECE, the green slime disease. We had to finger feed her with Ferretvite several times a day, and give her water out of an eye dropper several times a day as well. She simply would neither eat or drink on her own at all. The vet to whom we took her prescribed a drug that had to be compounded into a liquid by a local pharmacy, and was purple in color. It was only available at one pharmacy in our area, as supposedly it was an obsolete drug. I don't remember the name of the drug, and am not really sure whether or not it actually worked. During the ordeal, which lasted about six months, we had to take her into the vet to have her surrounding conditions treated, such as dehydration and other opportunistic infections. It was a long drawn-out battle, but we finally won it in the end, as after about six months, she began to eat and drink on her own once again. During the six month period of time that she was ill, there were a couple of times that we thought we were going to lose her, but, as luck would have it, finally she completely recovered.

As you may already know, ECE affects the digestive system of the ferret whose intestines become raw and inflamed. Such is why they stop drinking and eating. Our ferret would only eat Ferretvite at first, and then later would eat Gerber's Chicken Baby Food, but would not eat either unless finger fed. It appears that smooth, bland foods such as Ferretvite and baby food are not so hard on their digestive system as is the case with Ferret Kibble. ECE is highly contagious, and can be very deadly. You are in for a battle with this rotten disease, but, as was the case with our little Courtney, it can be beaten with very observant and proper care.

Hi I have 3 ferrets (we just got a 2 month old) and two of them
contracted ece from our little boy....we took them to the vet today and
they received a fluid injection (15 cc for the female and 30 cc for the
male) and were put on prednizone. Well our 8 month old little boy is
bouncing back (he wasn't eating or drinking), but our 3 year old girl
is not doing so well....we are force feeding her and forcing liquids
into her but she doesn't want them it is a constant battle to get
anything into her, she won't even take treat or ferritone any more!
Please help if you have any ideas!
