Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Help! They Quit Pooping!!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I'm so sorry you guys are going through this. You say they aren't pooping, =
but you don't mention if they are still eating. Nothing in would give nothi=
ng out. Did you see anything in Clyde's last poop to show that he did pass =
a mass of something? Green poop can be food traveling in and out a bit too =
fast.

I don't understand why you want to give pumpkin - I believe that is used to=
help stem diarreah not promote loose stools. If I wanted to give something=
extra to loosen my ferret's stools I might give them some warm milk. A bit=
of milk won't hurt your ferret unless s/he is lactose intolerant=A0 - then=
s/he'd have tummy cramps - and it can loosen bowels. You can also give ext=
ra virgin olive oil or butter. If you are really concerned you might want t=
o take them to their vet - I would think only s/he can give you a definitiv=
e answer... with palpations,=A0X-rays or ultrasound.

Some options for excluding ferrets from boxsprings and furniture include bo=
arding up around the foundations, like you have suggested, also getting a t=
hin sheet of wood, such as a sheet of paneling, or hardware cloth, aka rabb=
it wire. Cut the material to fit the frame of what you are protecting. If u=
sing hardware cloth be sure to cut off protruding wires, and nail or staple=
to the bottom of the piece, box spring, couch, chair etc. To further make =
hardware cloth safe from accidental punctures you can cut tape, such as duc=
t tape, and place 1/2 the width of the tape along one side of the wire edge=
the entire length of the edge's side and fold the tape over so that the ed=
ge is enclosed in tape. Enclose all sides in tape.

I do hope your guys are OK and not blocked. Best of luck to you.

[Moderator's Note: oils and butter do NOT help blockages pass. They actua=
lly take longer to digest so can slow digestion and since they are normally=
digested they can't "grab" onto things like petroleum jelly based animal l=
axatives do to help pull them through. The exception is giving more of any=
type of fat/oil than the ferret can deal with and that can cause bird seed=
stools with diarrhea]
