Vena Cava litigation

My boy, "Legolas", had his right adrenal gland removed in early July
last year.

It took me awhile to find a vet that could/would and had
experience to remove the right adrenal gland. That is the harder one
to remove. Some vets say they can do it but in many cases they are
only debulking (removing as much of it as they can), not actually
removing it all. This is because the right side typically grows
connected to the main vein (vena cava) in that location (and sometimes
grows stuck to the liver) and cannot all be removed without risking
other things.

There are several specialist vets that are doing a new
procedure to remove entire adrenal gland and that is what my guy,
"Legolas", had. The vet I went to was in NJ.

It's been a year now and so far things are OK and he has fully
recovered and looks great. He still has less energy than before
adrenal kicked in, and still has an enlarged prostate. Unfortunately he
is also showing signs the other adrenal gland may be going bad (and
at time of sugury the vet did say it looked discolored but did not want
to remove both @ same time).

In effort to stop/slow the problem with the left he is getting lupron
injections and has a melatonin implant (plus being kept in a dark -
real dark - room for sleep time and try to minic sleep/wake cycles
like in nature).

The operation WITH associated costs/med's cost around
$1,700 (Argh!!!!), while the melatonin implant was about $65 (and
lasts about 4 months) and the lupron injections cost about $35-$210
depending on what dose/time period you go with (just make sure you get
time release lupron - not 24 hour lupron as some vets will give you).

Anyway, speaking of time..I must close this and go. Here are some
links to check:

http://www.custompetrx.com/leuprolide.htm (pharmacy to buy lupron -
they call it leuprolide. You and your vet will have to figure out
needed dosage/time period - some
further links below may help with that.

http://miamiferret.org/fhc/index.html (adrenal menu on left top of
page - some selected pages highlighted in my links below)

Good luck.

P.S. make sure your vet doesn't forget to prescribe pain med's after
surgery. :-(
