Subject: [ferrethealth] Need ferret-proofing suggestions....
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

We're working on ferret-proofing our living room - no small task, but
it's coming along nicely. There's just one thing I'm not sure how to
deal with at this point, so I'm looking for suggestions. We have hot-
water baseboard heating. I know I need to get the insulation that
covers the pipes to and from the baseboard unit to prevent burns, no
problem there. But I'm not sure how to deal with the baseboard itself.
For anyone not familiar with what I'm talking about, there's a hot
water pipe that runs all the way along the wall. On each end there is
just the pipe, which we'll cover with pipe insulation. (Of course,
this will require regular inspection to be sure they're not chewing
it.) In between the exposed pipe sections, the baseboard unit
consists of the hot water pipe in the center, with a serious of thin
metal pieces attached to it to distribute the heat. Then the whole
thing has a 3-part metal housing to protect it. (I found a picture
here:
http://homerepair.about.com/od/heatingcoolingrepair/ss/heating_types_4
.htm) I need to figure out a way to cover the metal housing (without
obstructing the heat, of course) because it is all too easy for the
furbabies to get inside there from the top or the bottom and
potential get burned or cut (those thin metal pieces have just enough
edge to them). I would prefer to come up with something that could be
left permanently in place since we're talking about a 10 foot section
of the room, so it need to be something that's not an eyesore.
Thinking ahead, I'm also wondering about keeping them safe once we
put up the Christmas tree. (I know, I know...it early to be thinking,
but...) It always goes in the corner of the living room and there
really isn't any other place in the house to put it.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

- Brandy
