Got the pathology report to go with this now:
"...sample is consistent with a perianal gland carcinoma (hepatoid
gland carcinoma). Clusters and nests of markedly pleomorphic cells
along with extensive foci of necrosis and subacute inflammation make
up the predominance of the mass along with proliferations of fibrous
connective tissue. The mass is partially encapsulated; however,
infiltration of adjacent skeletal muscle is also identified.
Neoplastic cells extend to several margins of the submitted tissue
sample, and excision does not appear to be complete. Local recurrence
is anticipated, and distant metastasis may also be possible, although
this appears to be a relatively low-grade carcinoma."
I'm still not sure if "low-grade" is really applicable when the thing
doubled in size in one week (or less) before, but I'll talk to the vet
about that when we go for follow-up. We knew going in that it would be
unlikely for excision to be complete, anyway - the thing was in way
too awkward a spot.
Right now the little weasel seems to feel okay, for a post-surgical
seven-year old adrenal (on melatonin) girl.
