Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: KIDNEY PROBLEM
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

The vet should check to see how well the ferret is
concentrating urine. If not well, then extra fluids
will have to continue until the ferret can. This is a
simple test your vet can easily do,

Since it is sometimes hard to spot kidney disease
does your vet think that that this is
1. chronic kidney disease that lay hidden for a while
or
2. acute onset (truly sudden) kidney disease?

Some treatment and diet needs differ between the two.

Also, what is the suspected cause? That is important.
Is there
1. an enlarged prostate from adrenal disease
or
2. disease of a different organ system (examples include
heart disease or malignancies in other organs)
or
3. infection
or
4. environmental cause (examples include eating too many
grapes or too many raisins, getting into something poisonous)
or
5. uroliths (urinary tract stones)

If Urotiths then the type is important for knowing what to
do and so if taking the pH of the urine (also an easy test --
in fact, if your vet provides the test strips you can do this
at home).

Struvite Uroliths which go along with an alkaline pH are
caused by a diet that is too high in plant matter. With Calcium
Oxalate Uroliths the pH will tend to be slightly acidic. There are
meds for after these are removed. With Cystine Uroliths the
ferrets are genetically unable to handle much of 4 of the amino
acids and need to be on a lower protein diet and sometimes also
have meds. It usually pays to have the uroliths surigcally removed.

Now, the digested blood and lack of appetite point to the possibility
of a stomach ulcer. There are some less common causes, too,
like anything which has caused a perforation in the stomach or even
in part of the small intestine, but ulcers are common in ill ferrets,
and any ferret with serious kidney disease is a sick ferret.

I do not know what Carafate is called in Italy, but that will help
"bandage" the damaged portion of the stomach, and the generic name
is Sucralfate so your vet will know what it is from the generic name.
THE PROBLEM IS THAT IS CAN BE RISKY WITH KIDNEY DISEASE IF
ANTACIDS THAT CONTAIN ALUMINUM ARE ALSO GIVEN.

This medicine must NOT be given at the same time as food
and also needs a decent separation in time from medicines, and
it can't be given with some meds such as Digoxin.

BEGIN QUOTE:
Special warnings about Carafate
If you have kidney failure or are on dialysis, the doctor will be
cautious about prescribing Carafate. Use of Carafate while taking
aluminum-containing antacids may increase the possibility of
aluminum poisoning in those with kidney failure.
