Subject: [ferrethealth] UTI and ulcer - treatment for both?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I had posted earlier about a 3 year-old surrender Sampson I got in
who had a UTI and struvite uroliths. I posted the picture of the
uroliths he passed.
He has been on a high protein diet to prevent more forming, however, I
have not been able to bring his pH down below 6. Dr. Murray had
recommended aiming for 5 - 5.5.

He has developed another UTI and was started on Bactrim for that on
Thursday. Last night he was vomiting, grinding his teeth and whining.
I didn't know whether he was going to pass another batch of uroliths
since this was his pattern the last time he passed them a few days before.
Well his stool is pitch black today, so I guess he has an ulcer again.
He came with one. I have started him on the sulcrafate and bland
diet until I can get the anitiobics from the vet tomorrow for the ulcer.
My question is whether I should stop the Bactrim for the UTI (a chem
strip showed blood today in his urine and it is very orange in colour)
until the ulcer is dealt with? Can he be on 3 different antibiotics
at the same time i.e., Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin and Bactrim? Seems
an awful lot for his system to handle all at once.
Thanks!
Tressie
