Subject: [ferrethealth] Need help with Alfie--deformed jaw locking up
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

DIM is not age specific. Although was seen in younger ferrets for awhile, and I have not heard so much about it lately.

I had a friend whose ferret was confirmed to have this, he was about 2. Had slow progressive disease, started to act sluggish, then noted to have the fevers, ( very high), high white cell count on lab tests, continued to go downhill, but it took weeks. I am sure some can succumb faster.

Anyway, not that I think this is DIM just wanted to clear up any misconceptions.

Here is a link to info on DIM.

some info may be outdated.

How old is Alfie?

DIM occurs in ferrets up to 1 year old I believe, correct me if I am wrong? So if he is older than that, I would say you don't have to worry about DIM- also, DIM is a very fast moving disease. A member of another ferret board I am on had a ferret that was fine one day, and then later that night- his ferret went downhill fast and passed away in his arms within a few hours of seeming to be sick. I was up late on the site that night, (this was the night before I had to help my little guy Boomer to the Rainbow Bridge) and we got to talking and he was afraid it was a urinary blockage, but it couldn't be with the ferret only being like 8 months old I think- so I started thinking outside the box and looked up the symptoms of DIM, and he had numerous symptoms of DIM. Honestly- within 6-8 hours of him acting sick, he passed away. I don't think you need to worry about DIM. (in my opinion)
