Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Spaying Questions and Pivot's choices: a female in first estrus at 7 months
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello,
I am very sorry Haillie died so young and so soon after her spay.
My experience with late spays has been more positive. I have 3 DMK
sprites who were late spays and all are fine. Bellissima was spayed at
7 months old; Principessa and Carissima were spayed at 10 months. All
three still had their surgical stitches in when I picked them up from
MaFF.
Bellissima had at least one estrus cycle before her spay. Principessa
and Carissima were on a second estrus cycle, which was becoming
prolonged and were given an injection to take them out of estrus before
they could be spayed
They were still at the shelter when they were spayed, therefore, I don't
know whether their behaviour changed in any discernible way after
spayed.
However, the foster mom had warned me that Principessa was aggressive
towards other ferrets all along. Its six months since her spay and she
is still aggressive towards other ferrets, except for her sisters.
Spaying her certainly did not change her aggressive tendencies. She is
also a very large sprite, almost 3 lbs., given her sisters are normal
size not sure if the late spay has contributed to her size.

fantastic ferret hallie was 9months old when we had her spayd and after
she had been done she change very dramaticly she became upset and=C2
eventually we found that she had got into the dryer and died i then
spoke to a friend from an internet website who said that she should not
have been spayd at such a young age (as my vet had suggested)and once a
ferret makes its mind up to die nothing will prevent it from doing so
,if i had to make the choice again i wouldnt have had hallie done worse
