There seems to be a correlation between spaying before first estrus
and subsequent problems. I remember when I had my first dog at the
age of 10 (nearly 60 years ago), my grandfather told me that I should
let her have a litter of pups for the sake of her future health. At
the time I thought that it was just an old wives tale but he was an
experienced breeder of English bull terriers and greyhounds. She did
have a litter (a opportunist dog mated with her when she temporarily
escaped the property). My parents were not best pleased. She had 11
pups and lived to be 14.
Perhaps the emergent thinking of allowing first estrus to occur
and/or use of lupron/deslorien will turn out to be best practice.
