Karen,
Your method sounds a lot better/easier than the toes. I found one
reference (Pennyroyal Small and Exotic pet hospital) which mentioned
differences in the thickness of calluses on ferret toe pads. which
might affect the ease of getting a blood drop. There was a suggestion
that one use an emery board to gently file off the thicker callused
toes. I am a little reluctant to try that, but that might help if I
have to use the toes. I have another couple questions re the tail method.
I'm using an Alphatrak - its lancets have no adjustable setting. They
have a cap that comes off, and the lancet (3mm long) is exposed above
the plastic holder. When you say highest setting, presumably you mean
the the lancet tip is at its longest setting so you get a deeper
stick? And presumably you stick on the side of the tail close to the
tip rather than "head on" to the tip which would be hard to do anyway
I would think. Sorry for the questioning, but want to get it right
first time.
I have a feeling I'm not pushing my lancet deep enough, but then when
they jump at a not very deep stick in the toe, I can't bring myself to
do a repeat and push it deeper. It's interesting that Felicity has no
problems and softer feet - she's probably close to the same age as the
other 2 I've tried to sample, but those 2 have unknown histories and
perhaps the kind of flooring they were kept on made their pads
thicker. Or - do ferrets vary greatly in toe skin thicknesses I
wonder? I never thought much about it before this.
