Subject: [ferrethealth] Revolution & Splitting dose
To: <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I have always split the does of Revolution for both my cats and ferrets - a=
s others have suggested, the larger dog doses are more cost-effective than =
the smaller cat doses.

I found that sometimes the tiny volumes of the more concentrated solution n=
eeded by my ferrets is difficult to measure in a 1ml syringe, and so I dilu=
te the solution in isopropyl alcohol (from your pharmacy, 95% alcohol, not =
70% rubbing alcohol). As long as you keep track of how many mg per ml you s=
tart with and how many ml of alcohol you add, you can still easily does the=
correct amount.

Although not a vet, I am a Chemistry major and have worked as an analytical=
chemist. Isopropyl alcohol is probably one of the solvents used to carry t=
he selamectin and does not damage the drug or the animal as this is what is=
used in all vets and doctor's offices to clean skin and instruments. It wi=
ll just evaporate from the skin's surface.

The dose in the vials is not a suspension - the drug is soluble in the solv=
ent - so splitting a dose will give the same concentration of mg/ml. A susp=
ension, think sugar in oil, is when the sugar does not dissolve in the oil =
and you need to shake to get the particles to mix, but they will separate o=
ut when you let them stand. Revolution is like sugar in water - mix it up a=
nd the sugar granules 'disappear'.=20=20=20=20=20
End of today's lesson!!!
