To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

While there have been some reports of ferrets who had hidden insulinoma suddenly
become so serious that it had the potential to kill that is just incredibly rare.

On the other hand, either lymphoma or carcinoma in the pancreas can make itself known
out of nowhere with a sudden crash that can be fatal. The first crash we had with one
who had lymphoma in the pancreas even required one or two bouts of mouth over muzzle
gentle cheek puff resuscitation on the way to the vet, and a great many years later the
second we had here -- carcinoma that time -- had to be warmed and required at least
three bouts of AR on the way to the emergency vet.

Lymphoma can also wind up in the spinal cord. We had one ferret whose spinal cord
lymphoma caused her first to have difficulty holding urine, then she also developed fecal
incontinence, and finally she could not walk. The progress and symptoms depend on
where it is located in the spinal cord, of course.

What differs with this sweet little one are that instead of incontinence there was an
inability to urinate or defecate, and coldness of the limbs.

Of course, if something (heart disease, kidney disease, etc) had led to throwing clots
(thromboses), there could have been one than one thrown. Certainly, when we had our
first one who began throwing clots she threw several in her final weeks.

If the inability to urinate occurred that alone can be enough to stop bowel movements
from passing just from there being too much pressure on the intestines. The possibility
of an intestinal blockage was what things first looked like with both of our ferrets who
has cystine stones. Inability to walk can happen with any serious medical problem for
ferrets, and if giant bladder occurred perhaps that would have even applied enough
pressure to the iliac artery which could account for the coldness.

So, I can think of several possibilities offhand but have to wonder most about the
something like that possibility of any of the types of uroliths or even a bladder tumor
followed by giant bladder, though that is just a guess from the symptoms I recall reading
hours ago.

Was the bladder imaged or was it drained by needle to see if that might help and to check
the results?

A great many apologies if i am not recalling the symptoms correctly, and please, accept
my sympathies for your loss.
