Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: update on Sampson and question on Diazoxide
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

The 3 1/2 year-old gib Sampson, I have been posting about, with struvite
uroliths, recurring UTIs, etc. has been diagnosed with insulinoma. His
blood panel and subsequent blood glucose test confirmed this. His
non-fasting BG was 52.

My vet has opted to put him on diazoxide rather than
prednisone/prednisolone because of his recurring infections and ulcers.
Concern is that pred is immunosuppressive and with his chronic history
of infections is not the best choice for him.

He's had to order this in and should be here today.

Vet suspects he may be adrenal as well from a number of vague symptoms
i.e., blood in urine samples but not in cytocentisis. He has no hair
loss. We are still waiting for analysis to come back from the struvites
he passed. I am wondering whether the blood could be from tears in the
urethra when he passed the struvites that may not have completely healed
yet (photos of which I posted earlier)?

Sampson may be a surgical candidate down the road when his overall
health is stable but right now his health is too compromised to put him
through the stress of surgery.

Diazoxide is normally a second medication added when pred is no longer
adequate to deal with the insulinoma. How does it fair as primary
treatment to medically manage insulinoma?

Thank you!

Tressie
