Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: What could my baby have died of?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

There was so much with that ferret which insulinoma alone
would never explain...

On the surface it seems the straight-forward answer, and
it is common enough that it or a different pancreatic tumor
may be part of the total picture, but I think that it does not
mesh up with anywhere near enough of what was encountered.

My inclination is to think of lymphoma most strongly but there
are other options.

Lymphoma can go to the pancreas, BTW, so there is no need to
postulate BOTH lymphoma and insulinoma. There could have
been lymphoma which began somewhere else -- perhaps the
spleen although enlarged spleens are seen with age as well, then
moved to places like the pancreas and spinal cord, even with a
pelvic floor or lower intestinal tumor that blocked the colon and
urethra, or having it in the spinal column may have been enough
on that score.

Lymphoma CAN hide away and then suddenly present in a massive
way. Not only have we encountered that with 2 of ours in 27 years
but we know vets who have with their own ferrets. With our Jumpstart
we knew something was "off" for about a year before his final day
but nothing found it, even with multiple sonograms. In the end they
figured it might have been holed up in his marrow for a long time.
Then on his final day he developed a thoracic tumor which was growing
in real time. X-rays were done hours apart and in the temporal series of
three sets of x-rays you could watch it hugely change in just hours, with
startlingly rapid growth.
