Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: update on Sampson and question on Diazoxide
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi Sukie,

Actually he's not one of my DMKs but he did arrive with his share of
medical problems. He's the little guy who was surrendered to our
rescue organization with his companion. Both gibs were in pretty bad
shape when they arrived, anorexic, dehydrated, skin and bones. They
couldn't even walk. They had been fed cheap cat food from when kits by
first owner. I actually spoke with her, she claimed that Sampson was
allergic to ferret food. Second owner only had them 2 months before
she surrendered them to us and had been feeding them fruit loops.
Sampson had an ulcer and UTI when he arrived. Both had watery
diarreah. Sampson's was black water.

I started them on a diet of Pedialyte, Carnivore Care, chicken baby
food, A/D and fed them every 4 hours for the first 48 hours, while
giving both sulcrafate a half hour before each feeding. Stools firmed
up within that time. Then started them both on Amoxil and Biaxin
(helicobacter protocol) for 14 days.

Ash, his older companion was slower to recover but has not had the
recurring problems Sampson's been plagued with.
